A Study on the Incidence of Dental Caries of Lepory Patients


Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to detact correct dental health including incidence of dental caries and D. M. F. rate in leprosy patients. The author also compared the data of leprosy patients with that of healthy people.
The author has studied the prevalence of dental caries and D.M.F. rate and average number of
present present teeth of leprosy patients according to World Health Organization criteria. 650 leprosy patients (319 male and 331 female) were examined aged from 15 to 78. The results are as follows:
1. Among 650 leprosy patients, 552 have at least one carious tooth.
Prevalence of dental caries is 84.92¡¾1.40 per cent, 81.50¡¾2.17. per cent in male and 88.22¡¾1.77 in female.
The prevalence of dental caries of leprosy patients is higher than that of healthy people.
2. Average number of decayed, missing or filled teeth is 4.20¡¾0.13 teeth, 10.04¡¾0.66 teeth and 1.04+0.12 teeth per mouth.
3. Average present number of teeth is 20.54¡¾0.88 teeth in male and 18.62¡¾0.53 teeth in female. Average number of teeth per mouth of leprosy patients is less than that of healthy people.
4. Prevalence of dental caries is 88.49¡¾2.09 per cent, 88.43¡¾2.91 per cent in male and 88.55+2.78
in female.
5. Average present number of permanent teeth is 10.98¡¾0.65 teeth in male and 11.92¡¾0.46 teeth in female.
